What's the safest way to clean mold for kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for a couple of weeks and their allergies are going crazy. I finally pulled their wooden toy chest away from the wall in our Sharjah apartment and found a huge patch of black and green mold behind it, probably from the humidity. What's the safest and fastest way to clean this up to protect them?

Move the children and their toys to a different room and ensure good ventilation by opening windows before you start. For a small patch (under 1 square meter), a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can be effective. Scrub the area thoroughly, but never mix cleaning agents.

Given the proximity to your children’s toys and the potential for disturbed spores, wearing an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection is non-negotiable. The wood may have absorbed moisture, so the cleaning must be followed by complete drying to prevent rapid regrowth. A dehumidifier is crucial for this in Sharjah's climate.

For any mold growth larger than 1 square meter, or if it has penetrated porous materials like drywall or the wooden chest itself, professional assessment is strongly advised. Remediation experts will contain the area to prevent cross-contamination and use HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, which is the safest approach for a household with allergy sufferers. The cause, likely interstitial condensation from the wall due to humidity and AC temperature fluctuations, should also be identified to prevent recurrence.
