Who is responsible for cleaning the dust from construction?« Back to Previous Page

After the recent construction next door, our living room window sill has been covered in a fine layer of gray dust. It’s particularly noticeable when we open the windows, and my kids have been coughing more than usual lately. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, but I’m not sure if it's my responsibility to clean or if the landlord should be handling it since they are aware of the ongoing work. Should I bring this up with them, or am I overthinking it?

Construction dust is indeed a concern and it sounds like the ongoing work next door might be contributing to the issue. In dubai/u.a.e., regulations do stipulate that contractors must take necessary steps to minimize disturbance of particles during construction activities, but this doesn't necessarily mean you, as the resident, should bear the responsibility for cleaning up.

Firstly, i'd suggest contacting your landlord or property management if they are aware of the ongoing construction. They might be responsible for ensuring that proper measures are taken by the contractors to prevent such issues. According to the Dubai Municipality Environmental Health & Safety Regulations, developers and constructors are required to manage their sites in a way that minimizes environmental impact.

However, it is also advisable to check your lease agreement or any previous communications with your landlord regarding maintenance responsibilities. Sometimes, these agreements can specify who is responsible for cleaning and upkeep of common areas, which might include dust from construction.

If the situation persists and you feel uncomfortable with the level of dust in your living space, i recommend requesting a professional inspection. Companies like Saniservice (call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com) can provide an assessment to determine if there are any health risks associated with the dust and advise on appropriate cleanup measures.

In terms of immediate action, you could start by gently sweeping or vacuuming the dust from your window sills. Use a damp cloth as it helps in trapping particles better than dry methods. Ensure good ventilation when opening windows, but do so at times when there is less outdoor dust present if possible.

Remember, while construction dust can be annoying and potentially harmful, it's not something that should solely fall on the residents to clean up. Your landlord or property manager has a responsibility to ensure your living environment meets safety standards.
