Why does dust increase after rain?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a fine dust settling on everything inside my ground-floor flat. It’s particularly noticeable on the windowsills and in corners near the ventilation grilles. The dust seems to increase every time it rains, which is quite frequent here. Is there anything we can do to reduce this dust?

Dust accumulation after rain in Dubai can be quite common. In the UAE, especially during the rainy season, dust particles get suspended and airborne due to moisture from rainfall. Once these tiny particles settle on surfaces, they can easily accumulate, leading to a noticeable increase in dust levels indoors.

In areas like ground-floor flats or those near ventilation grilles, this effect is even more pronounced. Rainwater can carry finer particulates from outside, which then get deposited on your windowsills and other hard-to-reach areas. This phenomenon isn't exclusive to Dubai; it's a common issue where high humidity and frequent rainfall are part of the climate.

To manage dust effectively, consider these steps:

1. Regular Cleaning: Increase the frequency of cleaning in your flat. Focus on corners, under furniture, and around windowsills as these are hotspots for dust accumulation. Using microfiber cloths can be particularly effective as they trap dust rather than just spreading it.

2. Ventilation Management: Ensure that your ventilation system is functioning well to help remove airborne particles before they settle. Regularly check and clean filters in your air conditioning units if you have them.

3. Seal Gaps: Check for any gaps or cracks around windows and doors, especially those near the ground floor where moisture can seep through more easily. Using weatherstripping can help keep dust out of your living space.

4. Use Humidity Control Devices: High humidity can exacerbate dust issues as it allows particles to remain airborne longer. Consider using dehumidifiers in areas prone to moisture accumulation, like bathrooms and kitchens.

5. Professional Inspection: If the issue persists or if you notice unusual odors along with the increase in dust, it might be worth calling for a professional inspection. Dust can sometimes indicate other issues such as mold growth, which is more common after heavy rainfall. By implementing these tips, you should be able to reduce the amount of dust in your flat and maintain a cleaner living environment during the rainy season.
