Why does sand keep accumulating indoors after dust storms?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storm we had last week, I noticed a layer of fine sand settling on all the window sills and furniture in my living room. Despite regularly cleaning, it seems to come back almost as quickly as I can clean it up. How can I effectively prevent this from happening again?

Cleaning up after dust storms is indeed a big challenge especially for residents of Dubai. The accumulation of sand indoors can be frustrating and seems to return almost as soon as you clean it up. This issue often stems from the way air currents move through your home, coupled with how effectively your property manages or fails to manage such intrusions.

In dubai, due to its climate and proximity to desert regions, fine particles are more likely to find their way indoors during dust storms. These storms can generate a massive amount of airborne particulates that penetrate even the most seemingly secure windows and doors. To tackle this problem, you need a multi-pronged approach:

Firstly, ensure your property has effective sealing around windows and doors. In Dubai, many homes are built with double or triple glazing to reduce heat transfer but also to prevent dust particles from entering. If you notice an increase in sand accumulation despite having such features, consider installing additional weather stripping or door sweeps.

Secondly, invest in quality air filtration systems. While traditional vacuum cleaners might help remove some of the fine sand and debris, they may not be as effective against very small particles. Consider upgrading to a HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filter that can capture 99.97% of airborne particles down to 0.3 microns in size.

Thirdly, regular maintenance is key. Even if you seal and filter your air intake effectively, it’s still important to have periodic inspections by professionals. In the UAE, regulations like those stipulated under the Building Code (EN12831) provide guidelines for indoor air quality but don't specifically address dust storms. However, a professional inspection can help identify areas of vulnerability that might need attention.

Lastly, consider implementing a regular cleaning routine focused on high-traffic areas and potential entry points such as windowsills, doorways, and near vents. Using microfiber cloths or damp cloths can be more effective in capturing fine particles than dry methods alone.

Remember, it’s always good to keep an eye out for signs of water intrusion during dust storms too. If there's any indication that water is coming through your property, it could lead to mold growth which is a serious health concern and not something to ignore. In case you need assistance or advice on dealing with such issues, don’t hesitate to call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com.

Taking these steps should help reduce the amount of sand entering your home in the future and make cleanup more manageable.
