Why is moisture increasing with dehumidifier?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a strange damp smell in my living room, but it’s only gotten worse since we turned on the dehumidifier. The windows are sealed tight, so I can’t understand where all this moisture is coming from. Have anyone else experienced similar issues and what did you do about it?

Hi there,

First off, it's really unfortunate to experience moisture issues like this. It sounds like you’ve got your hands full trying to figure out the source of these damp smells. The fact that you've noticed an increase even after turning on a dehumidifier is concerning. Let’s dig in and see what could be going on.

First off, there are a couple of potential culprits for this situation. One common scenario in Dubai and the UAE is condensation forming when humid air meets cooler surfaces inside your home, especially during the transitional seasons from winter to spring or summer to fall. This can happen even if windows are sealed tight due to the temperature difference between indoors and outdoors.

Another possibility could be an underlying moisture issue that the dehumidifier isn’t fully addressing. In Dubai, we've seen cases where there's a leaky pipe, a faulty HVAC system, or even water seeping in from outside, perhaps through weak points in your building’s envelope. It would really help to have a professional environmental inspection done by someone familiar with local regulations and conditions.

UAE regulations do require that buildings are designed and constructed to prevent moisture intrusion, but sometimes, despite good intentions, things can go awry. For instance, the UAE Building Code (UAE Standard 105) sets standards for building design and construction practices to ensure durability and safety, including provisions related to water management.

In your case, it might be worth checking if there’s any ongoing moisture from sources you haven't noticed yet. For example, check under floors or near exterior walls for signs of dampness. Also, inspect areas where pipes enter the building—they can sometimes create hidden leaks that a dehumidifier won’t catch.

If you feel this issue is serious, it's crucial to call in an expert like us at Saniservice. Our team has extensive experience dealing with similar issues here in Dubai and the UAE. We’d be happy to conduct a thorough inspection and recommend appropriate solutions. Don't hesitate to reach out to 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for assistance.

In the meantime, keep an eye on your HVAC system's filter and change it regularly as recommended by the manufacturer. Also, ensure that any indoor plants are well-drained to avoid contributing additional moisture into the air.

Hope this helps and wish you all the best in resolving these issues!

Cheers,
