Why is mold smell getting stronger?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rains we had last month, I noticed a musty smell coming from under my bedroom closet. Upon closer inspection, there seems to be some mold growth in the corner where water pooled after the rain. It's been weeks since it happened but now that I think about it, it smells stronger than before. What could be causing this and how can I clean it up properly?

The mold smell getting stronger could be due to several factors. Firstly, it's important to understand that once mold has started to grow and produce spores, the odor can intensify over time as these spores release more of their compounds into the air. In the UAE and Dubai, especially after heavy rains like those we've had recently, moisture levels can remain high longer than in some other climates due to our humid conditions.

In your case, since water pooled under your bedroom closet and has been present for weeks, it's likely that this area remains a breeding ground for mold. Mold thrives in damp environments with temperatures around 20°C to 35°C (68°F - 95°F), which fits well with Dubai’s climate. If the conditions are still favorable – humidity and temperature levels not decreasing significantly – then the mold will continue to grow, leading to an increase in its smell.

To properly clean up this situation, you should take swift action:

1. Prevent Further Growth: Make sure the area is completely dry before starting any cleaning process. Use dehumidifiers or fans if necessary. Open windows (if weather permits) for ventilation. In Dubai’s climate, it might be harder to achieve complete drying without some form of equipment.

2. Clean Affected Areas: Use a mixture of water and detergent to scrub the moldy areas. For tougher stains, a solution of 1 cup bleach per gallon of water can be effective. Always wear protective gear like gloves and masks while cleaning up mold.

3. Replace Damaged Materials: If the mold has grown on materials that are difficult or impossible to clean thoroughly, it might be best to replace them instead of risking ongoing health issues from lingering spores.

4. Professional Inspection: Given the UAE's specific regulations regarding indoor air quality and building maintenance, it would be wise to have a professional inspection done. In Dubai, you can contact Saniservice by calling 800-MOLDS or emailing hello@saniservice.com for expert advice and remediation services.

Remember, addressing mold issues promptly is crucial not only for the sake of your home’s value but also for your health. Mold exposure can lead to respiratory problems and other health complications, especially in individuals with allergies or asthma.

By taking these steps, you should be able to mitigate the situation effectively. However, if the smell persists or if there are any health concerns, don't hesitate to seek professional help.
