Why won't dehumidifiers work on damp closet?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a persistent dampness in my bedroom closet, and now there's an odd moldy smell that won't go away despite using dehumidifiers. The closet is on the ground floor, and we keep the door slightly open to circulate air, but it doesn’t seem to help much. Have you had similar issues, and what steps can I take to prevent this from happening again?

First off, I totally understand the frustration of having that dampness and moldy smell persist despite your efforts. This is actually quite a common issue here in Dubai & UAE, especially after rainfall or high humidity periods.

Dehumidifiers are indeed effective tools for managing indoor moisture but they may not always be enough on their own. There can be multiple reasons why dehumidifiers aren't working as expected:

1. Insufficient Dehumidifier Capacity: The size and efficiency of the unit might not be adequate for your space, particularly if it’s a smaller closet that's sealed off from other areas.

2. Poor Ventilation: Even though you keep the door slightly open, the airflow in the closet might still be insufficient to remove moisture effectively.

3. Sealed Closets or Storage Units: Closets with tight seals can trap moisture inside and dehumidifiers may struggle to pull it out.

4. High Humidity Levels: If your home's overall humidity levels are too high, a single closet may not get enough of the dry air needed for effective dehumidification.

To tackle this issue in Dubai & UAE:

• Check Dehumidifier Settings: Ensure your dehumidifier is set to remove moisture effectively. It’s best if it can maintain around 40-50% relative humidity.

• Increase Air Circulation: Try to enhance airflow into the closet by placing a fan or leaving the door more open, but ensure you’re not creating too much drafts that could cool your home.

• Consider Using Multiple Units: If one unit isn’t cutting it, consider using two or more smaller units strategically placed in the closet and nearby areas.

• Inspect for Leaks and Moisture Sources: Look out for any visible signs of water damage like leaks from pipes or roof issues. Also check for condensation on windows which could be a tell-tale sign of excess humidity.

For serious cases, it’s wise to get a professional inspection. In Dubai & UAE, we recommend services provided by companies that adhere to local building and health codes such as Saniservice, who can offer comprehensive solutions including dehumidification systems, air conditioning adjustments, or even structural modifications if necessary.

Call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for an expert assessment. Remember, addressing this now can prevent more costly issues down the line like mold growth and structural damage.
