Is dust from construction harming my kids?« Back to Previous Page

After the construction next door resumed a few weeks ago, I’ve noticed a constant cloud of dust settling in our living room. Even though we keep windows closed, it’s still noticeable, especially when my kids come home from school with their allergies acting up. Could this be causing their persistent coughs and sniffles?

Dust from construction work can indeed be a serious concern. Especially given the dry climate and fine particulate matter that's common here in Dubai, it’s understandable why you're noticing an increase in dust settling in your living room.

In the UAE, especially during construction phases, the levels of particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) can spike. These tiny particles are easily inhaled and can cause a range of health issues, particularly for children who have more sensitive respiratory systems. Persistent coughs and sniffles could very well be linked to this issue.

First, it's important to consider the UAE's environmental regulations. According to the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), construction sites are required to minimize dust by implementing measures such as water spraying, covering materials with nets, and ensuring that all vehicles leaving the site are clean. However, compliance can vary, so observing these practices is key.

If you're experiencing significant discomfort due to the dust, it would be wise to call in a professional for an inspection. Our company, Saniservice, offers expert environmental inspections which include air quality testing, identifying sources of dust, and recommending solutions tailored specifically for your environment. You can reach us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection.

In the meantime, there are steps you can take on your own to mitigate the effects of construction dust:
1. Use HEPA air purifiers in key rooms to filter out fine particles.
2. Consider installing temporary air conditioning units that come with built-in filters for better air quality control.
3. Keep windows sealed and use door sweeps to prevent dust from entering when you or your kids return home.
4. Encourage your children to take a shower after school to wash off any external dust.

Remember, the health of your family is paramount. If symptoms persist or worsen, consult with a healthcare professional for advice.
