Could hotel cleaning affect our health?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy cleaning they did at our hotel room a few days ago, I’ve been feeling pretty run-down. The air feels strange and there’s this lingering chemical smell that doesn’t seem to go away, even with all the windows open. My wife has also been complaining of headaches and a persistent cough. Given how close we are to the hotel, could this be related? Is it common for hotels to use cleaning products that might affect health in such a way?

Could Hotel Cleaning Affect Our Health?

Absolutely. The cleaning agents and products used in hotels can indeed impact our health if they're not properly managed. In the UAE, particularly Dubai, there are certain regulations set forth by the Department of Municipalities & Urban Planning (DM&UP) to ensure that cleaning procedures do not compromise guest well-being.

When a hotel undergoes thorough cleaning, it's common for residual chemicals from detergents and other substances used in the process to linger in the air. This can lead to a chemical smell and might cause respiratory issues or headaches, especially if the room is poorly ventilated. In Dubai, hotels are required to follow strict guidelines on ventilation during cleaning hours and after the work is done.

Your symptoms - feeling run-down, experiencing a lingering chemical smell, headaches, and coughing - could be linked to the cleaning activities that took place in your hotel room. It's not uncommon for such reactions to occur, especially if you're close to where these chemicals are used.

To address this issue, I'd recommend having a professional environmental inspection done. Contact Saniservice at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for an expert evaluation. They can provide detailed reports on the air quality and recommend appropriate steps to mitigate any negative effects.

In the meantime, ensure you maintain good ventilation by opening windows whenever possible. Using HEPA filters in your room can also help capture small particles and allergens that might have been left behind. Staying hydrated is important too as it helps flush out potential toxins through urine.

Remember, while hotels usually take precautions to minimize health risks, external factors like proximity or individual sensitivities could still play a role. A professional inspection will give you peace of mind and actionable steps moving forward.

Stay healthy!
