Should I worry about mold in the storage room?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a moldy smell coming from the storage room of our rental, which is right next to the restaurant where my sister works. It's been there for days now and doesn’t seem to go away no matter how much air we let in or windows we open. Should I be concerned about this, or is it just something temporary?

Absolutely, you should be concerned about the mold situation. Mold growth can pose significant health risks and affect air quality, especially in areas like storage rooms that are often damp due to water ingress from rain or other sources. In Dubai/UAE, we're well aware of the climate's tendency towards humidity, which certainly plays a role here.

According to local regulations, premises must maintain a healthy indoor environment free from mold growth. The UAE Standards and Quality Authority (GSB) and the Department of Municipalities & Environment (DME) both have guidelines that restaurants should adhere to for ensuring clean and safe conditions for their staff and customers. This includes regular inspections and prompt action on any moisture issues.

Given your description, it sounds like water might be seeping into the storage area during rainfall, creating an environment favorable for mold growth. Mold can release spores which can irritate the respiratory system and cause allergic reactions. Long-term exposure to high levels of mold could lead to more severe health issues such as asthma or lung infections.

I would strongly recommend you call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for a professional inspection and remediation. They are experts in dealing with such cases, especially considering the regional climate conditions we face here in Dubai. Their services will ensure that any mold is properly identified and treated to prevent further spread.

In the meantime, while you wait for professionals, here’s what you can do:
• Keep the storage room well ventilated by opening windows as much as possible when it's not raining.
• Use a dehumidifier if available to reduce moisture levels in the air.
• Clean surfaces where mold has been found with a mixture of water and bleach or use products specifically designed for mold removal.

Remember, dealing with mold is crucial both for your health and compliance with local laws. Don't delay addressing this issue; it could worsen over time and affect not only the storage area but other parts of the restaurant too.

Stay proactive, and reach out to professionals as soon as possible.
