How can I reduce dust in my son's bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storms we had last week, my son started sneezing and coughing quite a bit. The bedroom where he sleeps is especially dusty, even though I clean it every few days. Given our location in Dubai, which gets extremely hot and dry during summer, how can I effectively tackle this dust issue to make sure the air quality improves for everyone?

Reducing dust in your son's bedroom can be quite the challenge especially in such a dry and hot climate as Dubai. Firstly, it is important to understand that the UAE does not have specific regulations on indoor air quality but it is highly recommended for you to keep up with best practices to ensure a healthy environment for your family.

To start tackling this dust issue, here are some practical steps:

Firstly, deep clean your son's bedroom thoroughly. This should include removing all beddings and curtains, washing them in hot water to kill dust mites and other allergens. Use steam cleaning on carpets and upholstery as it can effectively remove deeply embedded dirt and dust.

Secondly, consider the use of a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter. These filters are highly effective at trapping tiny particles like dust mite debris, pollen, mold spores, and pet dander. Place one in your son’s bedroom to help clean the air more effectively. In Dubai's climate, running it for about 2-3 hours a day may be sufficient depending on how dusty the environment is.

Thirdly, increase ventilation by opening windows when the outdoor air quality is good (check this through the local weather report). This can help bring in fresh air and reduce indoor pollutants. However, during dust storms or high pollution days, it’s best to keep windows closed.

Fourthly, consider using a dehumidifier. Although Dubai's climate is dry, it can still be useful as it reduces moisture which helps prevent mold growth. Aim for a relative humidity of 30-50% in the bedroom.

Fifthly, regular maintenance on your HVAC system is crucial. Schedule an inspection and cleaning with a professional to ensure that filters are changed regularly and systems are serviced. This can help reduce dust circulating through the air.

Lastly, it's always wise to keep an eye out for any visible signs of mold or pests which could be contributing factors to your son’s symptoms. If you notice anything unusual, consider calling 800-MOLDS or emailing hello@saniservice.com for a professional inspection and advice.

Remember, creating a clean and healthy living space is key. Keeping the air fresh and free from irritants will go a long way in improving your son's comfort and well-being during these hot summer months.
