Are dust storms causing health issues indoors?« Back to Previous Page

After the dust storm that hit Dubai last week, I noticed a thick layer of sand settling on the books in our living room bookshelf. The windows were closed, but it’s still evident that some dust has found its way inside. My kids have been complaining of sore throats and coughing ever since. Has anyone else experienced similar issues during these storms?

Dust storms can indeed cause health issues indoors. In the UAE and particularly Dubai, these storms bring a substantial amount of dust, sand, and even fine particles from outside into your home. Even though you kept your windows closed, some dust did manage to get inside, as evidenced by the layer on your bookshelves.

The thick layer of sand and particulates can affect indoor air quality significantly. These tiny particles can irritate respiratory systems leading to symptoms like sore throats and coughing - exactly what your kids have been experiencing. In addition to these visible effects, there are also smaller particulate matter that might not be so obvious but still pose health risks when inhaled.

According to local regulations, it's important to maintain the indoor air quality as much as possible, especially during such events. The UAE does not have specific dust storm related laws or guidelines, however, staying aware of environmental conditions and taking necessary precautions is encouraged by health authorities.

To ensure your family’s well-being, consider having a professional inspection done. At Saniservice, we offer thorough indoor air quality assessments that can help identify any hidden risks from the recent dust storm. Our team uses advanced equipment to measure particulate levels and assess overall air quality in your home.

If you decide not to go for an inspection or if symptoms persist despite cleaning, it is advised to speak with a healthcare professional. Persistent coughing and sore throat could be signs of something more serious than just irritation from dust.

Remember, after such storms, thorough cleaning is essential. Use a damp cloth to wipe down surfaces; this helps in trapping the fine particles that dry cloths might miss. Also, consider running an air purifier for a few days to help filter out any lingering particulates.

Lastly, don’t forget about your HVAC systems. They can be a significant source of dust and allergens if not properly maintained. Saniservice offers maintenance services as well which can keep your system in top condition.
