Can we clean indoor air after a sandstorm?« Back to Previous Page

After the sandstorm that hit our area a few days ago, I’ve noticed my children have started coughing up lots of phlegm in the mornings. The windows and doors were tightly shut to keep out the sand, but it’s hard not to worry about all that fine dust lingering indoors. Is there anything specific we can do to clean or purify the air in our home to make things safer for them?

Cleaning indoor air post-sandstorm can be quite a challenge esp. in areas like Dubai where such storms are frequent. The fine dust and particles that enter your home during these events can indeed lead to respiratory issues, particularly for children. Here's what you need to know & do:

Firstly, it is advisable to schedule a professional inspection by a company like ours to assess the extent of the contamination and ensure your indoor air quality meets the UAE standards. Regulatory bodies in the UAE have set guidelines for air quality that are crucial to maintain, especially after such events.

To start with, cleaning your home thoroughly is key. Begin by opening windows briefly when the storm has passed to flush out some of the dust. However, if you're still experiencing high levels of particulates inside, keep them shut tight and use a HEPA filter air purifier. These devices are effective in trapping tiny particles that regular filters might miss.

HEPA stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air and these purifiers can remove up to 99.97% of dust, pollen, mold, smoke, and other allergens from the air. Make sure your air purifier is UL certified as it indicates compliance with strict standards set by Underwriters Laboratories.

Additionally, use a damp cloth or a microfiber duster to wipe down surfaces like furniture, windowsills, and floors. This will help remove any dust that has settled during the storm. Regularly vacuuming carpets and rugs can also help but ensure your vacuum cleaner comes with a HEPA filter for best results.

Another useful tip is to increase indoor humidity levels slightly by using a humidifier. This helps keep mucous membranes moist, which can help prevent coughing and other respiratory issues caused by dryness from the sandstorm.

Lastly, consider planting some indoor air-purifying plants like spider plants or peace lilies. They not only add a touch of greenery but also naturally filter out toxins from your home's air.

Remember, if symptoms persist or worsen despite these measures, it may be time to seek further assistance from a professional. Don't hesitate to call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for expert advice and services tailored specifically to your needs.

Stay safe & healthy!
