Is strange odor from AC related to dust storm?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storm we had last month, I noticed a strange odor coming from the air vents in our master bedroom. It's not as strong as mold but definitely there, especially when we first turn on the AC. My family has been complaining of sneezing and itchy eyes lately too, which makes me wonder if this could be related to the ductwork. Has anyone else experienced similar issues and what did you do about it?

Yes, the strange odor from your AC could be related to the dust storm we experienced last month. The heavy winds and dust can easily get into the ductwork of your HVAC system, potentially carrying along any pollutants or allergens that were stirred up during the storm.

In the UAE, particularly in Dubai, our climate is often dry and dusty, making it a common occurrence for such storms to affect indoor air quality. After such events, it's not uncommon to see an increase in dust accumulation within the ducts, which can lead to odors and even trigger allergic reactions or sneezing.

I'd recommend having a professional inspection done by a qualified HVAC contractor familiar with local regulations like those set forth in the UAE Building Code and the Emirate Specific Regulations. These experts will be able to assess if there's any mold growth within your ducts, which can sometimes produce odors similar to what you're experiencing.

In addition to a professional inspection, it’s also a good idea to clean or replace filters regularly (every 3-6 months depending on usage), and consider having the entire HVAC system cleaned at least once a year. This not only helps in maintaining indoor air quality but can also improve your AC's efficiency.

If you decide to go ahead with an inspection, Saniservice is a reputable company that offers such services and can help ensure your home’s air is as clean as possible. You can contact them by calling 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or sending them an email at hello@saniservice.com.

Remember, keeping your indoor environment free from dust, allergens, and other pollutants is crucial for the health of you and your family. With a bit of maintenance and professional help when needed, you can enjoy cleaner air all year round in Dubai!
