Could basement odor affect family health?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a musty smell lingering in the basement where we store our winter clothes. My daughter has been complaining of a persistent cough since then, and I’m worried it might be related to the air quality down there. The AC unit is quite old and doesn’t seem to filter out odors very well. Could this be affecting my family’s health?

Absolutely, the odor from your basement could very well be affecting your family's health. In the UAE, particularly in Dubai, humidity and moisture can lead to mold growth which is a common culprit for odors like musty smells. Mold not only gives off unpleasant odors but also releases spores that can irritate the respiratory system, leading to coughs, allergies, and even asthma attacks.

In your case, it sounds like the AC unit might be too old to effectively filter out these allergens and moisture particles. Given the conditions in Dubai, where we often experience high humidity levels, this is a serious concern for indoor air quality (IAQ). You should consider having an inspection by a professional environmental consultant or an IAQ expert to assess the situation.

The UAE, like many other countries, doesn't have specific regulations mandating regular indoor air quality checks in residential areas. However, it’s highly recommended that you take proactive steps to ensure your home environment is healthy and safe for your family. Professional inspections can help identify potential sources of mold, humidity, and other contaminants, allowing for targeted remediation.

Call 800-MOLDS or 800-66537 or email hello@saniservice.com to set up an appointment with our team at SaniService. We offer comprehensive indoor air quality assessments and can provide recommendations on how to improve the IAQ in your home, including advice on upgrading your AC unit if necessary.

Remember, early intervention is key to preventing health issues that could arise from poor indoor air quality. Don’t wait for symptoms to worsen—act now to protect you and your family’s health!
