Who pays for cleanup after construction?« Back to Previous Page

After the recent renovation next door, we’ve had a constant cloud of dust lingering around our living room windowsills. It’s especially noticeable when we open the windows to let in fresh air. My kids have been complaining about their throats hurting and I’m worried it could be from all this dust. Who is responsible for cleaning up after construction?

Hey there,

Construction dust can indeed be a real nuisance, especially when it seems to be seeping into your space. In the UAE, particularly within Dubai, it's quite common for neighboring construction sites to leave a trail of dust that can affect nearby properties.

In terms of who is responsible for cleaning up after construction, this usually depends on the terms and conditions outlined in the contract between the developer or contractor and the property owner. Ideally, the party initiating the construction project should ensure that appropriate measures are taken to minimize disruption and clean-up issues. However, if you find yourself dealing with excessive dust affecting your living space, there are a few steps you can take.

Firstly, it's good practice to have an open communication with the building manager or developer of the construction site next door. They should be able to provide information on when the dust is expected to subside and what measures they're taking to address the issue. If they are not cooperative, you might need to seek advice from local authorities.

According to UAE regulations, particularly in Dubai, it's mandatory for contractors to adhere to environmental standards during construction. These guidelines include measures to control dust and other pollutants. Should these guidelines be violated, you can report the issue to relevant authorities like the Department of Municipalities and Urban Planning (DMUP).

If the dust levels are becoming unbearable or if your family is experiencing health issues, it might be wise to consider having a professional inspection done. We recommend contacting Saniservice at 800-MOLDS or hello@saniservice.com for an expert assessment. A professional can provide you with detailed insights on what steps need to be taken and ensure the situation is handled appropriately.

In most cases, it's best if the contractor takes responsibility for cleaning up once construction is complete. However, in our experience, they might not always do so proactively. Thus, having a written agreement or contract outlining responsibilities can help prevent such issues from escalating.

Remember to keep an eye on the weather too; dust tends to settle more heavily during dry spells. If conditions are particularly bad, try sealing doors and windows with damp cloths to prevent further ingress of dust into your home.

Lastly, if you find that the situation is worsening or health concerns persist, don't hesitate to take action. Protecting your family's well-being should always be a priority.

Hope this helps,
