Can I handle mold myself or should I call professionals?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy storms we had last month, I noticed a strange mold growing behind the kitchen cabinets. It’s not a huge area, maybe about 1 square meter, but it’s spreading and looks quite concerning with its greenish-black spots. I’ve tried scrubbing with vinegar, but nothing seems to work. Can anyone who has dealt with this before suggest if I can handle it myself or should I call in professionals?

Handling mold in your home can be a daunting task especially after the heavy storms we've experienced recently. Mold growth behind kitchen cabinets sounds like it could be a concern. The greenish-black spots you're seeing are common signs of mold, and while vinegar is a good start, sometimes more potent solutions or methods are needed.

Firstly, it's important to assess the situation properly. In Dubai/UAE, mold can grow quickly in damp conditions, especially after heavy rains like those we've had. The UAE Building Code (UAE Standard EN 13785:2004) requires buildings to be designed and constructed with measures that prevent or minimize moisture-related issues.

If the area affected is only about one square meter, you might consider tackling it yourself if you're equipped with the right tools. However, given the persistence of the mold despite your efforts, a professional inspection would be wise. Mold can often indicate deeper moisture problems in walls or behind surfaces that require expert intervention to fully resolve.

To start on your own, ensure good ventilation and clean up any debris from the storm. Use a solution like hydrogen peroxide which is more potent against mold than vinegar. Wear protective clothing including gloves, mask, and goggles when working with moldy areas. Thoroughly scrub the affected area and allow it to dry completely.

However, if you find that the mold keeps coming back or if the area of infestation expands, it's highly recommended you call in professionals for a thorough inspection and remediation. Saniservice (contact 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com) is one such company that has experience dealing with mold issues in Dubai.

Remember, safety should be your top priority. Mold can release spores into the air, causing allergic reactions or respiratory issues. If you're unsure about how to proceed, don't hesitate to seek professional advice to ensure a safe and effective resolution for your home.
