Should I clean AC ducts myself or hire pros?« Back to Previous Page

After the intense summer heat this year, I noticed a strange dust accumulation in the ducts of our second-floor master bedroom. The AC seems to work less efficiently lately, and my partner thinks it might be due to all that dirt blocking the airflow. Given we've lived here for 2 years, is it worth hiring professionals or could we clean it ourselves? What should I expect in terms of cost and effort either way?

Absolutely worth it to have the ducts cleaned by professionals especially given your observations. The intense summer heat this year might well have contributed to a significant accumulation of dust and debris, which could indeed be affecting the efficiency of your AC system.

In Dubai/UAE, local regulations do not mandate regular cleaning of HVAC systems, but many building codes recommend it for maintaining optimal indoor air quality (IAQ) and energy efficiency. The UAE Ministry of Energy and Water (MoEW) guidelines suggest that HVAC systems should be inspected and maintained at least once a year to ensure they are functioning efficiently.

Cleaning ducts yourself can be time-consuming and potentially risky if you're not familiar with the correct procedures. Dust, dirt, and mold found in ductwork can pose health hazards, particularly for those sensitive to allergens or suffering from respiratory issues. If the dust has been accumulating over 2 years, it’s very likely that it could contain more than just ordinary household dust – possibly including mold spores which are a major concern.

Professional HVAC cleaners typically use advanced equipment such as high-volume low-pressure (HVLP) vacuums and special brushes to safely remove debris from both the ducts and your air handling unit. They also have the expertise to detect any hidden issues that could be contributing to poor airflow, like obstructions or signs of mold growth.

Cost for professional cleaning can vary; however, it's generally a one-off expense that could save you money in the long term by improving energy efficiency and reducing the likelihood of costly repairs down the line. In Dubai, expect to pay around AED 500-1000 per session depending on the size of your system and any additional services required.
