How can I prevent sand from accumulating on curtains and books?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storms we had last week, I noticed a layer of fine sand collecting on all the surfaces in my living room, even though I clean every day. It’s particularly noticeable on the curtains and books. How can I ensure this doesn’t happen again or how should I clean it up without causing more damage to the fabrics?

Cleaning data from sand accumulation can indeed be a tricky task, especialy in our dusty environment. In dubai, we often experience sand storms which can deposit fine particles onto delicate items like curtains and books. To prevent this from happening again or to efficiently clean up after such events here are few steps you could take:

Firstly, it is crucial to understand that regular cleaning practices may not be sufficient in the face of heavy dust storms. The best way to deal with sand accumulation on fabrics such as curtains and books would be to use a soft-bristled brush or a vacuum cleaner with an attachment designed for delicate surfaces. Be gentle while brushing or vacuuming, avoiding any harsh scrubbing that could damage the materials.

For curtains, you might want to consider washing them in a gentle cycle using a mild detergent. Allow them to air dry away from direct sunlight to avoid heat which can shrink fabrics or cause colors to fade.

Books are more delicate and should be cleaned with great care. You can use a soft cloth dipped in a mixture of water and mild soap, then gently wipe the pages and covers. Avoid using too much liquid as this could seep inside and damage the book's binding.

Another important measure is to create barriers around your living areas during sand storms. Use window coverings or plastic sheets to reduce the amount of dust that enters through windows. Additionally, consider setting up a 'shoe removal' area near doorways where you can remove footwear before entering—this helps in trapping much of the fine sand at the doorstep.

In some cases, it may be beneficial to have an inspection done by professionals who specialize in indoor air quality and remediation. They can assess your home's environment and provide specific advice on how best to manage dust accumulation. Always remember, prevention is the key here. Keeping windows closed during sandstorms and regular maintenance of your cleaning practices can significantly reduce the amount of sand entering your home in the first place.
