Am I allergic to dust storm residue?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storm we had last week, I’ve been experiencing a persistent cough and some shortness of breath whenever I’m inside my apartment. The air feels thick, especially in the evening when it gets really still. Should I be concerned about indoor air quality or are these just allergies?

Hey there! I'm glad to hear from you. It's understandable that after the heavy dust storm last week, you might be experiencing some respiratory issues. While it could very well be allergies due to dust and other particulates, it’s important to consider your indoor air quality as well.

In Dubai and the UAE, we often see high levels of PM10 (particulate matter) during sandstorms which can irritate the lungs and cause coughing and shortness of breath. These particles can be quite heavy and may settle on surfaces in your apartment over time. The thick feeling you're experiencing could very well be related to this. However, it's not uncommon for people to confuse dust-related irritation with allergies.

To get a better understanding if the air quality inside your apartment is compromised or if there are allergens present, I'd recommend having an indoor air quality inspection. The regulations in Dubai, including those set by the Environmental Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) and the Municipality of Dubai, emphasize maintaining good IAQ to ensure public health.

If you do decide to proceed with a professional inspection, it’s best to call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com. They can conduct tests for indoor air pollutants, allergens, and provide recommendations on how to improve your living environment. This will help in determining whether the dust storm residue is causing these symptoms.

In the meantime, try using an air purifier with a HEPA filter to help remove larger particulates from the air. Make sure to keep windows closed during sandstorms and clean your apartment regularly by vacuuming carpets and washing curtains to reduce the amount of dust settling in your home.

Remember, maintaining good indoor air quality is crucial for everyone’s health, especially those who are more susceptible like children or people with respiratory conditions. Don’t hesitate to seek further advice from a professional if symptoms persist!

Hope this helps!
Warm regards,
