Is mold causing my kids' symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rains last month, I noticed a persistent musty smell in my bedroom closet. Upon closer inspection, there seemed to be mold growing on some of the back walls. My kids have also been complaining of coughing and runny noses since we moved here two years ago. Could this be related to the mold?

The musty smell and the presence of mold in your closet could indeed be linked to your kids' symptoms. Mold can produce allergens that irritate the respiratory system leading to coughing, runny noses, and other upper-respiratory tract issues. In the UAE, especially in Dubai where the climate is warm and humid, mold growth due to excess moisture or water damage isn’t uncommon.

According to the UAE's Building Code (Building Regulations 2015), it’s essential to address such situations promptly as mold can pose serious health risks. The code mandates that buildings must be constructed with proper moisture control measures to prevent mold growth and ensure occupant safety.

Given your situation, I would strongly recommend you call in a professional for an inspection. You could reach out to Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. They can assess the extent of mold growth and advise on remediation steps.

In the meantime, ensure you take some preventive measures:
1. Remove any damp materials like carpets or curtains from your closet and replace them with non-porous items.
2. Use a dehumidifier to reduce moisture levels in the area.
3. Ensure proper ventilation by opening windows when weather permits.
4. Clean the affected walls thoroughly with a mixture of water and a bit of detergent, then dry completely.

Remember that if you notice mold growth or any signs of dampness, it’s crucial to address these issues as soon as possible to prevent potential health risks for your family. Keep an eye on your kids' symptoms; if they worsen or new ones appear, consult a healthcare provider immediately.

Stay proactive and take care of the indoor environment in your home!
