Is damp smell and kids' coughs from mold or dust mites?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a damp musty smell coming from under my bedroom carpet. It’s particularly noticeable when I walk across it. My kids have also been coughing more than usual since we started using the air purifier. Could this be related to mold or dust mites? What should I do about it?

It sounds like you might be dealing with some indoor air quality issues that could indeed be linked to mold growth or dust mites. In the UAE, particularly in Dubai, humidity can sometimes reach uncomfortable levels due to both the climate and any recent weather events such as rain. This can create conditions where moisture builds up under carpets, leading to damp smells or mustiness.

The coughing from your kids could indeed be linked to these issues. Dust mites thrive in warm, humid environments which are common in our region. They also produce allergens that can irritate the respiratory system of children and adults alike. Additionally, mold spores can trigger allergies and asthma symptoms, causing coughs and other breathing problems.

To address your concerns, I would recommend a thorough inspection by professionals who specialize in environmental quality. In Dubai, companies like Saniservice are well-equipped to conduct these inspections using advanced equipment such as moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint areas of concern. They can also provide remediation services if mold or other issues are found.

In the meantime, you can start by ensuring proper ventilation and drying out any damp spots under your carpet. Use fans or dehumidifiers to lower humidity levels in your home. Regularly clean carpets and surfaces with a vacuum cleaner that has HEPA filters to trap allergens. Consider using air purifiers too; they can help reduce dust mites, mold spores, and other allergens.

Remember, maintaining indoor environmental quality is key not just for comfort but also for health. If you suspect mold or dust mites are the culprits behind your family's discomfort, do reach out to Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a professional assessment and advice.
