Can I clean AC coil or need pro?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storm last week, I noticed a strange odor coming from the kitchen where we keep the air conditioner unit. It's been bothering me, and I’m not sure if it’s because of the dirty coil or something else. Can someone tell me if cleaning the AC coil myself is something I can handle, or do I need to call in a professional?

Cleaning your AC coil can be a doable task, but there's more to consider than meets the eye. In Dubai/UAE, it’s important to understand that the environment we live in—especially with the recent dust storms—can introduce a lot of particulate matter into our air conditioning systems. This accumulation can lead to not just odors but also potential health hazards.

Firstly, assessing if you should clean your AC coil yourself or call in professionals depends on several factors:

1. Experience and Safety: Cleaning an AC unit requires some knowledge about the system. If you're unsure of how to safely access the coil without damaging other components, it's best to have a professional handle it.

2. Health Concerns: The dust storm that passed through could contain more than just dust. It might also include pollen, mold spores, and other allergens. These can accumulate on the AC coil and potentially circulate through your air conditioning system. A thorough cleaning is necessary to ensure these contaminants are removed properly.

3. Regulations and Standards: In Dubai/UAE, there aren't specific regulations that mandate how often you should clean your AC unit, but it's generally recommended every 6-12 months for optimal performance and health benefits. Regular maintenance can prevent issues like mold growth which could be harmful to your family’s health.

If you decide to attempt cleaning the coil yourself, here are some basic steps:
• Turn off the power supply to the air conditioner
• Remove any filters and clean them separately with a vacuum cleaner or mild soap solution
• Use a soft brush or cloth to gently clean the coil. You can also use a gentle stream of water if the unit is turned off, but ensure no water gets into the electrical components.
• Reassemble the unit and turn on the power

However, given that you're dealing with a recent dust storm and an odor issue, it might be wise to have a professional inspection. They can determine if there’s more than just coil dirt causing the smell and ensure all systems are clean and properly functioning.

Remember, maintaining indoor air quality is crucial in Dubai/UAE's climate, especially post-dust storms. If you're concerned about odors or suspect mold growth, don't hesitate to reach out to a professional service. You can call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) for an inspection and remediation if needed.
