Should damp smell be a concern after rain?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rain last month, I noticed a strange damp smell lingering in my bedroom closet. The AC is pretty old and hasn't seemed to be doing much to clear it up. Given that we’ve lived here for two years without any issues before, should I consider hiring an indoor air quality expert or could this be something simple like dehumidifiers or better ventilation?

Absolutely damp smells should be of concern after heavy rains. In the UAE, particularly areas like Dubai, humidity can significantly increase during rainy seasons, leading to moisture build-up and creating an ideal environment for mold growth. The strange smell you're noticing could very well be indicative of mold spores or mildew in your closet.

Given that this is a new development and it's been two years since you've experienced such issues before, it’s prudent to have the air quality inspected by a professional. The UAE doesn't have specific regulations on indoor air quality but ensuring good ventilation and moisture control can help prevent health hazards and damage to property.

Firstly, check your AC system; an old or malfunctioning unit might not be effectively removing moisture from the air. Consider cleaning or replacing the filters if necessary. Additionally, dehumidifiers can be a great temporary solution, especially in damp areas like closets. Make sure you use one rated for the appropriate area size and that it’s properly maintained.

Improving ventilation is another key step. Open windows when weather permits to let fresh air circulate, but ensure that condensation doesn't form inside your home by using fans or dehumidifiers. You might also want to consider installing a whole-house exhaust fan if you have poorly ventilated spaces like basements or crawl spaces.

However, given the potential for mold and mildew growth due to moisture, I’d recommend contacting an expert in indoor air quality. At Saniservice, we offer professional inspections that can identify not just the source of your damp smell but also any hidden issues that could be harming your health or property. Our team is well-versed with local conditions and regulations, ensuring a thorough assessment.
