Could dirty ducts cause coughing and odors?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storm we had last month, I noticed a persistent dusty smell lingering in my living room. The AC filter was clean, but when I peeked behind it, there seemed to be a lot of dirt accumulated in the ducts. My kids have been coughing more than usual too, and I suspect it might be related. Has anyone else here experienced similar issues with their ductwork?

Dirty ducts can indeed contribute to health issues like coughing and unpleasant odors. In the UAE, especially during our windy seasons, dust storms can introduce a lot of particulate matter into your indoor environment. If this isn't properly filtered out by the HVAC system, it can settle in the ductwork over time.

The accumulation of dirt, dust, and even mold spores within the ducts can lead to poor air quality, which might trigger or exacerbate respiratory issues like coughing, especially among children who have weaker immune systems. The persistent dusty smell you're noticing is a good indicator that there may be something more going on than just dust.

In Dubai, we do have regulations regarding indoor air quality (IAQ) and HVAC maintenance, though the specifics can vary. Regular cleaning of your ducts is recommended to keep them free from contaminants, especially if you live in an area prone to sandstorms or other dusty conditions.

If you're experiencing persistent coughing and a noticeable odor, I'd recommend having your system inspected by a professional. They will be able to thoroughly clean the ductwork and ensure that all areas are properly sanitized. This can help reduce allergens and improve overall IAQ in your home.

For those of you who might not have the resources for professional cleaning, at least consider a deep clean or consult with an expert on how often you should be servicing your system. Remember, maintaining good indoor air quality is crucial to the health and well-being of all family members, particularly children.
