Is AC filter replacement needed due to odor?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a strange odor coming from the air vent in the living room, especially when the AC is on. The smell seems to be stronger during the night. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, but I’m not sure if it’s related to the filter or something else. Could you advise if the landlord should replace the air conditioning filters, or am I overthinking this?

Absolutely, the smell from your AC could indeed be due to issues related to the air filter. In Dubai and across the UAE, regulations surrounding HVAC systems are stringent to ensure a healthy indoor environment. The filters can trap dust, pollen, mold spores, and other allergens that might not have been an issue before but now are causing unpleasant odors, especially after rainfall.

Firstly, it's crucial to inspect your air conditioning unit thoroughly. Check the filter for any signs of moisture or discoloration – these are telltale signs of potential issues. If you notice mold growth, which is common in humid conditions like those we experience during our rainy season here, it’s imperative that immediate action be taken.

The smell might have intensified at night because the air circulation has slowed down and humidity levels are higher. During cooler nights, moisture can settle on damp filters, promoting microbial growth and releasing unpleasant odors into your living space.

Given these circumstances, I strongly recommend replacing the AC filter promptly to address the odor issue. A fresh filter will help capture more airborne contaminants and reduce the likelihood of such smells in future. Additionally, it’s wise to have a professional conduct an inspection to ensure there are no underlying issues like ductwork contamination or mold growth elsewhere in your HVAC system.

If you’re unsure about how to proceed, feel free to call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) for advice on next steps.
