Is odor from vents linked to old AC filter?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storms we had last week, I noticed a strange odor coming from the air vents in the living room. The AC filter hasn't been changed since we moved in two years ago, and I’m not sure whose responsibility it is to replace it. Has anyone else experienced this issue or knows what should be done?

Is odor from vents linked to old AC filter?

Yes, the odour coming from your air vents could indeed be linked to an old and dirty air conditioning (AC) filter. In the UAE, especially during sandstorms like the ones you've had recently, dust and other particulates can accumulate heavily on filters leading to such issues.

In Dubai/UAE, it's not uncommon for residents to experience this problem due to the region’s unique weather conditions. Once the AC filter becomes clogged with dust, dirt, or even mildew, it can start to produce unpleasant odours as air passes through the dirty filter. This is why it's crucial to ensure that your AC filters are regularly replaced and cleaned.

It’s worth noting that in the UAE, there isn't a specific regulation mandating when you should replace your AC filter, but best practices suggest checking and cleaning or replacing them every 3-6 months depending on usage and environmental conditions. Since you mentioned it's been two years since the last replacement, that could definitely be the root of the problem.

If the smell persists even after changing the filter, there might be another underlying issue such as mold growth inside your air conditioning system. In this case, I highly recommend calling in a professional for inspection to avoid any potential health risks associated with indoor air quality issues. For instance, you can contact Saniservice at 800-MOLDS or email them at hello@saniservice.com.

Remember that keeping up with regular maintenance and cleaning of your AC system not only improves the comfort of your home but also ensures it operates efficiently, saving energy in the long run. Keeping those vents clear and fresh-smelling is a small effort for big benefits!
