Could mold cause my kids' coughs?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a strange moldy smell lingering in our bedroom. It’s particularly noticeable when we open the window at night. My kids have been coughing more frequently since then, especially early mornings before we clean up the area. Could this be linked to indoor air quality?

Absolutely could be! Mold spores can trigger allergic reactions and respiratory issues, especially in children. The coughing your kids are experiencing might indeed be linked to the mold growth you've noticed.

In Dubai and UAE, indoor air quality regulations aren't as strictly enforced as in some other regions, but that doesn’t mean it's not a concern. After heavy rains, moisture levels can increase, creating ideal conditions for mold to flourish. If the smell of mold is present, particularly when windows are opened at night, it’s probable that mold spores are being released into your home.

The coughing you've noticed, especially in the mornings before cleaning, could be due to the mold releasing allergens and irritants as it grows. These can irritate the respiratory tract and lead to symptoms like coughing and wheezing, especially among children who might have more sensitive airways.

I'd recommend getting a professional inspection done. Call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for an assessment. An expert will be able to identify if there's mold growth, where it is located, and how best to address the issue. They can also advise on improving your home’s indoor air quality in general.

While you're waiting for a professional, here are some tips:
• Ensure proper ventilation by opening windows when weather permits
• Use dehumidifiers to keep humidity levels below 50%
• Clean areas where moisture is likely to accumulate like bathrooms and kitchens regularly
• Consider installing a HEPA air purifier in the bedroom

Remember, tackling mold properly can take time and effort, but it’s crucial for your family's health. Don't hesitate to reach out if you need more advice or help.
