Are storm debris and dirty ducts linked to kids' coughing?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storm we experienced last month, I noticed a thick layer of debris on our ducts when cleaning the vents in the living room. The AC filter was also extremely dirty with all sorts of bits and pieces caught inside. My kids have been complaining of coughing fits lately and I suspect it might be due to this buildup. Has anyone else experienced similar issues after storms, or should I consider having the ducts professionally cleaned?

Absolutely, the link between storm debris and dirty ducts can definitely be related to your kids' coughing. The dust storms we experience here in Dubai and the UAE can carry a lot of particles like sand, dirt, and even microscopic organisms that can get sucked into your HVAC system if not properly maintained.

In the UAE, especially during such storms, it’s common for outdoor pollutants to enter through open windows or poorly sealed doors. Once inside, these contaminants can accumulate in your ducts and on your AC filters. Given how dirty both your ducts and filter were after cleaning them, it's a fair assumption that this could be contributing to the coughing.

In fact, many homeowners in Dubai have reported similar issues following storms. Particles trapped within the HVAC system can circulate through the air, leading to respiratory irritations especially in children or those with existing allergies or asthma.

To address this issue effectively, I'd recommend getting a professional inspection done. The guys at Saniservice (call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com) are experts here and can provide thorough cleaning of your ducts as well as check for any mold growth which is common in such conditions. They've helped many families in Dubai deal with similar problems.

While you're waiting for the professionals, ensure that your AC filter is changed regularly—every 3-6 months is a good starting point. Make sure all intake and exhaust vents are free from blockages to allow proper airflow. Also, consider sealing any gaps or cracks around windows and doors during stormy periods to prevent additional debris from entering.

Remember, maintaining clean air in your home is crucial for everyone's health, especially children. Don't hesitate to take action now before the issue worsens.

Hope this helps!
