How can I safely remove and seal moldy grout?« Back to Previous Page

My kitchen tiles in our villa in Mirdif have started to get these dark, grimy lines in the grouting that just won't scrub out, and it’s spreading. I think it might be mold from the humidity, but I'm worried about using the wrong product and damaging the tiles or making it worse. What's the most effective and safe way to deep clean and seal the grout to stop this from coming back?

The dark, grimy lines in your Mirdif villa's grout are a common issue here in Dubai, and you are right to suspect mold. Our high humidity, combined with year-round AC usage and dust, creates a perfect environment for microbial growth in porous grout. Attempting to scrub it often just pushes the contamination deeper.

For a safe and effective DIY approach, start with a solution of white vinegar and water or a dedicated, pH-neutral grout cleaner. Avoid harsh acids or chlorine bleach, as these can etch your tiles and damage the grout, making the problem worse in the long term. Scrub gently with a stiff brush, not abrasive steel wool. However, if the discoloration is persistent and spreading, it indicates a deep-seated colonization that surface cleaning cannot resolve.

In such cases, professional assessment is highly recommended. Our technicians at Saniservice use specialized steam cleaning and EPA-approved, non-toxic antimicrobial agents to eradicate the mold at its root. Following a thorough cleaning, the critical step is to apply a high-quality, penetrating grout sealer. This creates an impermeable barrier against moisture, humidity, and dust, preventing recurrence.

For a permanent solution to this pervasive Dubai problem, I advise calling our experts for an inspection. We can properly diagnose the issue, perform a deep hygienization, and apply the correct sealant to protect your home.
