Why does my AC smell damp in the evening?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our Jumeirah apartment has started blowing a weird, damp smell that’s strongest in the master bedroom. It only just began a couple of days ago and seems to get worse in the evening when the unit is running constantly. I’ve checked for any visible mold around the vents but can't see anything obvious. What's the most likely cause for this sudden smell and who should I call to get it properly checked?

That damp smell in the evening is almost certainly due to microbial growth inside your AC unit, which is a very common issue in Dubai’s climate. The primary culprit is a clogged condensate drain line. Your AC removes humidity from the air, and that water drains out. In our dusty environment, that line can get blocked with a sludge of dust, algae, and mold. When the unit runs constantly in the evening, the standing water in the drain pan overflows, and that musty, damp smell gets blown directly into your room.
The high humidity and constant cooling cycle create a perfect environment for this. Even if you don't see mold at the vent, the growth is happening deep within the unit or the ductwork. A simple visual inspection won't reveal it. Your first call should be to a reputable HVAC maintenance company to thoroughly clean the evaporator coils and, most importantly, clear and sanitize the condensate drain line. This is a standard procedure. For persistent smells or if anyone in the home experiences respiratory irritation, a specialized indoor environmental quality company with microbiology capabilities can conduct swab testing to identify the specific microbial species present, which guides the appropriate remediation method. Always request documented proof of the work performed. |
