How to safely remove closet mold and prevent recurrence?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small, dark spots appearing on the ceiling in our walk-in closet. It’s been super humid lately and I’m worried it might be mold starting to grow. What’s the best way to safely clean this off and stop it from coming back?

Small dark spots on a ceiling in a humid closet are almost certainly mold. In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue caused by high humidity levels, especially in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces that are cooled by AC.
For safe removal, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Do not dry brush it, as this releases spores. Instead, use a cloth lightly dampened with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) to wipe the area. Ensure the room is well-ventilated during and after cleaning. Allow the area to dry completely. Preventing its return requires addressing the moisture source. The closet's constant cool temperature from adjacent AC ducts can create a condensation point on the warmer ceiling surface. First, improve air circulation. Leave the closet door open periodically and consider installing a small battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber inside. Check that your villa's AC system is properly balanced and not causing significant temperature differentials. For a persistent issue, a professional inspection can identify hidden condensation points or insulation problems within the ceiling void that are specific to your villa's construction. In many cases, correcting the thermal bridge and improving ventilation is the only permanent solution. |
