Is black mold urgent to treat behind bedroom wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and I'm worried it might be spreading inside the wall itself. Given how humid it's been lately, how urgently do I need to get this professionally treated before it becomes a major health or structural issue?

Yes, it should be treated with urgency. The combination of Dubai's high humidity and the fact it's on an external wall suggests a condensation or water intrusion issue, which allows mold to thrive and spread unseen.

Given its location behind items and on an exterior wall, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The priority is to identify the moisture source—it could be condensation from the AC, a small leak in the building envelope, or capillary action from the ground. Treating the visible patch without fixing the water problem will lead to immediate recurrence. An inspector will use a moisture meter to check the wall's internal humidity levels and a borescope to see inside the cavity if necessary, which determines the true scope.

While many black molds are common allergens causing congestion and irritation, the species can only be confirmed through lab analysis. For a hidden issue like this, a culture or DNA-based test from a sample collected during inspection is the only way to know if it's a more problematic type, especially with a bedroom location.

For containment, move all clothing and items away from the area immediately to prevent spore transfer. Increase air circulation in the room if possible. Remediation for a wall cavity often requires controlled removal of the affected section of drywall or plasterboard to properly clean the inner structure, a process that should be handled by a certified professional to prevent cross-contamination.
