AC rattling and black dust: dirty ducts or AC issue?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom in my Jumeirah villa has been making a weird rattling noise for the past week, and now there's a fine layer of black dust settling on all the furniture every day. We've lived here for two years and never had this issue until now. Is this a sign that the ducts are filthy and need a professional clean, or could it be something else with the AC unit itself?

The rattling noise combined with black dust points to a problem within the AC system itself, not just the ducts. While ducts can accumulate dust, they are rarely the source of a new, persistent noise. The black dust is likely soot-like debris from a mechanical component wearing down inside the indoor or outdoor unit.

In Dubai's climate, two common culprits are a disintegrating fan belt or deteriorating insulation inside the unit. The constant high humidity and year-round AC operation accelerate wear on these parts. When they break down, they get pulverized by the fan and blown into your room. A foreign object, like a loose screw or a piece of debris that found its way in, could also be causing the rattling and grinding into dust.

You should stop using that AC unit and arrange for a professional HVAC inspection immediately. Continuing to run it risks further damage to the compressor or fan motor, leading to a much more costly repair. A technician will open the unit to identify the source of the noise and debris. Once the mechanical fault is repaired, a full system clean, including the ducts, is necessary to remove all the contaminated dust. For a complete assessment, some companies can use borescope cameras to inspect the ductwork visually.
